Enero 22 del 2016: Capitulo 1

Buenos dias gente hermosa,
I want to start this introduction by saying how excited I am to do this research.
I hope the captivation I hold for this artist and everything she embodies becomes contagious, so that you are able to enjoy my research.
Since I was a little girl, art has been a big part of my life. At first, it was something to keep me busy. The earliest memories I have is stealing my father's chalk and sneaking out of the house to draw on the pavement of our street, or dipping my hands in fresh paint with my father to swear the white walls of my house
My transition from my mother country to the English- speaking world heightened my appreciation for the arts, as it became a bridge between languages. Even though I have spent most of my life in Mexico, I am not as familiar with Mexican/Latino Arts as I would like to be. On the other hand, I am fascinated with the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, but my captivation is due to her feminist vision, not her nationality. In other words, I was not attracted to her because she is Mexican like me, but because of her beliefs.
My research will focus on the elements that made her the icon that she is today. Most importantly, the shift in perspective that lead to her immortality, as she died the wife of Diego Rivera, and is now remembered as an idol to feminist and artist all over the world. To explore this subject I will be  interviewing artist, holding surveys at the heard museum, the phoenix art museum, and the Latino arts and cultural center. I will also be comparing the social components of Mexico during Frida Kahlo’s lifetime to Mexico today. There must have been a cultural change that lead the country, and later the world, to see this artist in a different light.

  1. Hi Ali! I loved what you had to say about your father and your relationship with art. So beautiful! I am so happy that you will be studying Frida Kahlo as she is such a unique and talented artist. However, I wish in this post you would go more into depth into what exactly you are studying and how you will be using your internship to study the immortality of Frida Kahlo. Maybe you could link your senior project proposal to the blog itself so I could read it. Thank you and I am so excited to keep reading on your progress!

  2. Ali, this is amazing! Frida Kahlo is such an influential figure, and its so exciting how you're going to be learning about her. I'm curious though--what specifically are you going to be doing to learn about Frida Kahlo? And what do you think will be the best part of your project! Good luck and I look forward to keeping up with your posts!

Will you be comparing earlier Mexican art to her or the difference between her work and the work done around the world at the time?
    Good luck!
